Why does very loud audio crackle?

Sound can only go so loud in a file. Anything louder is cut off ("clipping"), which crackles. This tool gently squeezes the loudest moments instead, so boosted audio stays clean.

Will it remove background noise?

No. Boosting makes everything louder, including hiss and noise.
