How Sukanya Samriddhi works
- A parent or guardian can open the account any time before the girl turns 10, at a post office or bank.
- You deposit for the first 15 years. For years 16 to 21 there are no deposits, but the balance keeps earning interest.
- The account matures 21 years after it was opened. Up to 50% can be withdrawn for her higher education once she turns 18 or passes Class 10.
- Interest is added once a year. This calculator assumes each year's deposit is made at the start of the year.
Is the maturity amount taxed?
No. Interest and maturity are tax-free. Whether deposits also reduce your taxable income depends on the tax regime you choose.
What if I miss a year's deposit?
The account becomes inactive. You can restart it by paying ₹250 for each missed year plus a ₹50 penalty per year.
