Year by year

How the SIP value is worked out

FV = P × ((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i × (1 + i)

P is the monthly amount, i is the monthly return (yearly % ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of months. Each instalment is assumed to go in at the start of the month, as most fund houses assume. With a step-up, the calculator raises P once a year and adds up every month separately.

What return should I enter?

No fund has a fixed return. Try a few rates, for example 8%, 10% and 12%, to see a cautious case and a hopeful case side by side.

Why does a step-up make such a difference?

Even a 10% yearly increase means later years add much more money, and that money still has years to grow. Compare 0% and 10% to see it.

Is this before or after tax?

Before tax and before any exit load. Gains on mutual funds are taxed when you sell, depending on the fund type and how long you held it.
