Year by year

How RD maturity is worked out

M = Σ P × (1 + r ÷ 400)^(k ÷ 3), for k = 1 to n

Each monthly deposit P earns interest, compounded every quarter, for the months it stays in the account. The first deposit grows for all n months, the last for one month. Adding them all up gives the maturity value. r is the yearly rate in %.

For example, ₹10,000 a month for 60 months at 6.7% matures to about ₹7.14 lakh, close to the Post Office's published figure.

What if I miss an instalment?

Banks and the Post Office charge a small penalty for a late deposit, and too many missed months can close the account. This calculator assumes every deposit is on time.

RD or SIP?

An RD gives a fixed, known return. A SIP in a mutual fund may earn more over long periods, but the value goes up and down. Compare with the SIP calculator.
