How to password-protect a PDF
- Choose your PDF.
- Type a password twice and choose what people may do after opening it.
- Press Protect PDF. Open the new file once to check the password works before you delete the original.
How strong is the protection?
The file is encrypted with 128-bit AES, which every common PDF reader supports. A long password with letters and numbers is much harder to guess than a date of birth.
Do print and copy limits always work?
Most readers respect them, but some apps ignore them. Only the open password truly keeps people out.
