Year by year
How PPF interest works
Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of that month, and added to your account once a year on 31 March. This calculator assumes you deposit the full yearly amount by 5 April, which earns interest for the whole year.
Is PPF interest taxed?
No. Interest and the maturity amount are tax-free. Whether your deposits also reduce your taxable income depends on the tax regime you choose.
Can I take money out before 15 years?
Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, and loans against the balance from the 3rd to the 6th year, within set limits.
What happens after 15 years?
You can close the account, or extend it in blocks of 5 years with or without new deposits. The balance keeps earning interest.
