Hash generator: MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512
Get the fingerprint of any text or file, or check that a downloaded file matches the checksum on the website.
What is a hash?
A hash is a short, fixed-length fingerprint of some data. Change even one letter and the hash changes completely, but the same data always gives the same hash. Software sites publish the SHA-256 of their downloads so you can check the file wasn't damaged or tampered with.
Which one should I use?
Use SHA-256 for checking files and for anything security-related. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for spotting accidental changes, but they're no longer safe against deliberate tampering.
Can a hash be turned back into the text?
No. A hash works one way only. Simple passwords can still be guessed by trying many options, which is why websites store passwords with slow, salted methods like bcrypt.
My hash doesn't match another tool's.
Usually there's a hidden space or line break at the end of the text. Tick Ignore spaces and line breaks at the ends.
