About the CELPIP Reading test

PartWhat you readQuestionsTime
1. Reading CorrespondenceA personal or work message, then a reply with blanks1111 min
2. Reading to Apply a DiagramA table, schedule or price list, and an email that uses it89 min
3. Reading for InformationAn informational text in four paragraphs, A to D910 min
4. Reading for ViewpointsAn opinion article, then a reader's comment with blanks1013 min

The real Reading test also includes some unscored questions mixed in with the scored ones, so the full section takes 55 to 60 minutes. Scores are reported as CELPIP levels from M (below 3) to 12, which match the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Many Express Entry programs ask for at least CLB 7.

How to use these tests

  1. Take Test 1 in timed mode to see where you stand.
  2. Read every explanation, especially for Part 4. It is usually the hardest part, and wrong options often state someone else's opinion, not the writer's.
  3. In Part 3, choose E only when the information really isn't in any paragraph. Similar words in a paragraph don't mean it's there.
  4. Do two or three tests a week and keep a list of the words you didn't know.

Always check the format and fees on the official CELPIP website before you book.
